Hi Bloomers! 🪻

I hope your gardens are starting to POP!🎇 I have really seen mine turn into its own entity and ecosystem over the last couple of weeks.

Ben has had a number of burgers, salads, wraps and garnishes already with the early harvests of summer!

All of these early crops are lovely and beautiful but my true triumph is in my ever so tiny cauliflower heads, coming to life in their tiny caccoons!

If you’ve ever grown broccoli or cauliflower before, you know just how fussy these little heads can be. Too much water, they will get fungus. Not enough water, they will die. Too much sun, they will flower too early. Not enough sun, they won’t produce.

With a regular watering and fertilizing schedule in place, the last thing I need to protect from is too much sun. Luckily for me, cauliflower plants come with their own built in sun shades!

With a little bit of garden twine, some fancy folding and patience, you can use the leaves of the plant to wrap up around the head to protect from the water sitting on the vegetable and also keep the sun from making the cauliflower flower or discolour.

There are other items you can purchase, little sun shades, mini pergolas, etc. But in my personal preferences, those that are easy (being free doesn’t hurt either! 😜) are always the best for my garden.

After a warm afternoon in the garden, weeding the pumpkin/melon patch, pruning the peppers and mixing in some egg shells, in my new hat (a birthday gift from my husband!) I always look forward to watering and seeing how well the water sits on the soil and not on the leaves. This is especially helpful with not inviting more pests or fungus to your garden, than you are already battling with. More on my battle with pests in my next post! 🐌🐜

Now it’s time to head out and do my evening garden check, tuck in the vegetables and make sure the cauliflowers are comfortable in their new covers for the night.

Happy watering and I’ll catch yah’ later buds!
